What is a Labradoodle?

February 25th, 2009

What is a Labradoodle, exactly?   When we talk about Labradoodles, we’re talking about a dog that has basically been separated into tow type: the Australian Labradoodle and the Labradoodle.  For simplicity’s sake, I’m calling them both Labradoodles because the name is more or less synonymous with either.

No doubt, you’ve probably heard of the Labradoodle and the hype associated with them in the newspapers, on TV shows, and on the internet. You’re probably wondering what the fuss is about and why people are paying thousands of dollars for these dogs.  Perhaps you’ve seen a Labradoodle in the flesh and liked their looks and temperament.  Or maybe you’re allergic to dogs and have heard that Labradoodles are hypoallergenic.  Whatever the reason, you’re looking into owning a Labradoodle.

Labradoodles are dogs whose origins were crossbreeds between Labrador Retrievers and Poodles.  With Australian Labradoodles, the dogs are an F4 or greater, meaning that this is a fourth-generation Labradoodle or above.

Labradoodles come in three sizes: standard (21-24 inches), medium (17-20 inches), and mini 14-16 inches).  All these measurements are height at shoulders.  Labradoodles can be any variation of color of Labrador Retrievers or Poodles including chalk, gold, caramel, red, silver, black, blue, chocolate, cafe, and parchment.

The Labradoodle’s coat can differ depending on the dog.  There are three main types of coat: fleece, wool and haircoat.  The latter being more like a Labrador Retriever’s coat and less like a Poodle’s coat and can have some shedding.
